Integrated Equipment and Critical Data Management in Air Conditioning

A multinational air conditioning manufacturer has selected VTech as the supplier of choice for all leak detection and refrigerant charging needs.

One of their U.S. manufacturing plants uses a combination of Pressure Decay and Tracer Gas leak testing for both their sealed units as well as heat exchangers. This is a “split” version of the VTech 75  Multifunction Leak Detection System, whereas the pressure decay portion of the test is performed separately from the tracer gas sniffing test in order to shorten “takt” time and specialize each function.

Refrigerant charging is performed with VTech 200 machines, the top of the line equipment for high production rates. These are multi-filler units that are able to sequentially charge different refrigerants on the same assembly line.

The product pre-sets are down-loaded by means of a proprietary bar-code combination through VTech Critical Data Management software. All relevant production and quality data is recorded and the product is tracked as it moves from one sequence to the next. Critical Product Tracking ensures that the product will not be allowed to proceed to the next process step unless it has successfully completed the previous one according to the set flow.

Bulls-eye: High Accuracy Refrigerant Charging in Scientific Cooling Systems

A leading multinational manufacturer of medical devices and cooling systems for scientific applications came to us with the following question: how to get an accuracy of 2/10 of a gram (0.2 g) on an 80 g charge, which works out to be ±0.003%! Like all refrigeration systems, the smaller the charge, the more accurate it needs to be for the system to perform at its peak efficiency. “Standard” refrigerant filling systems can usually be as accurate as 0.5 g, for a small charge (under 200 grams) or 1% over 200 grams.

We approached the problem from two sides: first we needed to guarantee a very precise tolerance in the refrigerant supply pressure; this was accomplished through the use of VTech’s Refrigerant Supply system including a special sensor that would identify any trace of vapor in the refrigerant supply line.

Secondly, we adjusted our PLC resident algorithms that control charging accuracy and increase the number of “counts” in our optical targets metering system. In the end, the VTech 101 Refrigerant Charging System hit the “bull’s eye” of 0.2 g accuracy!

It might be of interest to know that unlike most of our competitors, VTech standard metering device is not a “mass-flow” based system. Our proprietary technology allows us to achieve exceptional results as exemplified in this case study, while being extremely price competitive. In our opinion, Mass-Flow technology is a viable technology only for very specific applications, but

cannot be economically justified for traditional refrigerants and blends.

VTech UNO Refrigerant Charging System

R22 changeover for heat-pumps made easy

Faced with R22 changeover to R422b and R410a, US heat pump manufacturer had to choose between retrofitting its existing charging machines and purchasing new equipment. As with all things, a capital expenditure has to fit in the budget, and the VTech UNO was the logical choice. In fact, the VTech UNO costs about the same as updating older equipment, while providing obvious advantages in terms of state-of-the-art technology. This includes PC control with TFT touch-screen display using intuitive, easy to use software.

As an example, to change from one refrigerant blend to another, an on-screen menu guides the operator through every step, a process that only takes about 15 minutes.

While the UNO is our “entry level” machine, it performs with the same charging accuracy as other more sophisticated models.
This makes the VTech UNO ideal for tight budgets, without sacrificing quality.
