CO2 (R744) Refrigerant charging
Carbon Dioxide (also known as R744) is being implemented in specific refrigeration applications in North America, as an environmentally-friendly alternative to standard HFC and HCFC refrigerants (e.g. R134a). Multinational beverage producers such as Coca-Cola mandate the use of R744 in their point-of-sale vending machines, effectively "raising the bar" for environmental awareness. In fact, CO2 (R744), as a natural gas, has zero GWP (Global Warming Potential).
Like other natural refrigerants (Hydrocarbons), CO2 refrigerant charging poses its own manufacturing challenges. While the issue with Hydrocarbon R290 and R600 is clearly flammability, CO2 has a very high critical pressure (73.5 bar/1,067 psia) compared to 590 psia of R134a, requiring special equipment to dispense it.
